4 Reasons Why You Should Ditch Your Non-Stick Pans

Nonstick pans and pots are so convenient and most people love them because they are easy to clean and very little oil is needed when cooking. They are very popular and what is mostly sold at stores as they are a cheaper option. Though they are extremely practical, here are 4 reasons why you may want to ditch these from your home today.

HIGH HEAT CONCERNS. Did you know that you should not use non-stick pans on high heat? Nonstick cookware is made with Teflon (PTFE) which begins to break down even at the molecular level (so you may not even notice) and release toxic particles and gases which may be carcinogenic when on high temperatures. You may have seen broken down and flakey non-stick pans which is the result of said breakdown. If strong enough the fumes released from this breakdown can cause polymer-fume fever, a temporary flu-like condition marked by chills, headache, and fever. These fumes actually can kill pet birds which is why most bird owners never use teflon cooking ware.

DOES NOT ALLOW BROWNING, SEARING OR DEGLAZING. Because non-stick pans cannot withstand high heat they are not able to give you that beautiful and delicious browning and searing effect on your foods, especially meats. Non-stick pans are not favored by most chefs because of this reason and the fact that you won't be able to use the juices and pieces of meat that is normally left behind on a pan and developing them into the most delicious sauces.


NOT LASTING. In order to take care of your non-stick pans and pots you can only use plastic or silicone utensils since metal ones will scratch them. Also, nonstick cookware should never be preheated since it can’t withstand high temperatures. Most nonstick pans are known for not lasting very long as the teflon wears out easily with each use.

SAFETY ISSUES. Because of the overheating danger as well as the fact that nonstick pans easily flake off there is concern for ingestion. Before 2013 teflon pans were made with PFOA which has been linked to thyroid disorders, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, infertility and testicular cancer - just make sure you do not have any non-stick cooking ware from before 2013. Thanks to the US Environmental Protection Agency, PFOA was eliminate from Teflon products.

Though nonstick cooking ware is convenient and practical it isn't the best. I noticed that since I made the switch to stainless steel cookware my food cooks significantly faster, easier and looks even more delicious. Great alternatives to non-stick cooking ware include stainless steel, cast-iron, stoneware, & ceramic cookware. Most professional chefs only recommend non-stick pans for cooking eggs, pancakes & crepes.
