The Why's & How-To's of Alkaline Water

I was introduced to alkaline water by my hispanic family and friends as most of my wellness tips come from this culture that depends on nature more than medicine. Alkaline refers to the pH level in water. This number measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is on a scale from 0 (acidic) to 14 (alkaline). Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water and for this reason, many advocates claim it will help with the acid in your body. Regular water normally has a PH of 7, and alkaline water typically has a pH level of 8-9. A normal body pH level ranges from 7.30-7.45.

I have mainly used Alkaline water when I have an upset tummy or when feeling sick & dehydrated and it has proved to be very soothing. Alkaline water is said to be absorbed much faster by your body so it is recommended for athletes or people who may need an extra boost of hydration.  It's about balance and I personally do not consume alkaline daily, but certainly often keeping in mind your body's needs.

There are various ways to find or make Alkaline water, here are a few:

There are pH drops that can be bought. They are highly concentrated and contain potent alkaline minerals. When you using these, follow the directions on the bottles to determine how many drops to add to your water. It is always recommended to use filtered, distilled or purified water because the water usually has chemicals that are added during the distillation process.

Alkaline water can be made with baking soda and lemon.
- For one cup:  Add 1/2 of a TBSP of baking soda to 8oz of purified water and mix.  Squeeze a few drops of lemon & enjoy!
- For half a gallon: Add 1 TBSP of baking soda to a half gallon of water, and squeeze a whole lemon. Mix and enjoy!
* Though lemons are acidic they have an alkalizing effect in your body.

There are various ways you can get ready-to-drink alkaline water. Options in include filters as well as mineral/spring water (do not confuse with sparkling water which is usually more acidic). Most people prefer natural spring water because it is alkalized naturally. This water passes through rocks and soil and picks up minerals that affects its pH.  *If you like preciseness get some pH test strips to test your water.  Alkaline water is safe to consume ranging in levels 8-9.
