Created for Good Works

There is this misconception that evangelism and missions work can only be done in a different country, with people who aren’t like us, for the benefit of people who have never heard the gospel. To this I want to say, don’t believe it. There are people who are sent, and there are people who remain. Both play a vital role in the Kingdom and growing the church. I want to encourage other believers to grow where they are planted and to seek the lost in the communities which they abide.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NASB)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

These verses might be my favorites in the whole Bible. It tells us that we were saved by grace alone, through faith alone, as a gift from God alone so that no one can boast. It also tells us that in saving us according to the Lords rich mercy, he also preordained each of us for specific good works. These good works were prepared according to His will, and His good pleasure. Friends, if you are doubting if you are doing any good in the communities which you are living I want to encourage you with the knowledge that God himself has placed you there. If you feel burnt out and run down by the mundane duties of life in motherhood, marriage, work, or local ministry – I want to say, God has placed you there. Your value to the Kingdom is not less because you are not a full time missionary in Dubai, and the person in Dubai is no lesser than you. God has chosen in His wisdom to place each of us in specific roles for the purpose of glorifying God.

I want to share how the Lord has chosen to use me in my local community. The Lord has given me a burden for the Mormon people. As a result, I have spent many hours studying both the Word and the scriptures that the Mormons treasure.  I have fallen more deeply in love with Jesus, and more deeply in love with those who are believing the impossible gospel of Mormonism. I have had countless opportunities to witness to local Mormon missionaries, friends, and I have participated in evangelism at the Temple. I am a mother of two, a wife, and I work full time. There isn’t a lot of time to do “intentional” evangelism. However, the Lord has specific works that he has prepared for me to walk it. So I walk gladly in the work of pursuing those in the Mormon faith. Friends, this is just one area that the Lord has used me. I think often we don’t realize all the opportunities we are given to honor Jesus through our actions. Let us walk in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord, and may we glorify Him as we rejoice in the works that he has prepared for us to walk in.

For those of you who feel the itch to go aboard, GO! But do not believe the lie that your time in your local community is wasted. Don’t believe the lie that God isn’t doing work in your life. He has prepared you for good works in Christ Jesus. Celebrate where God has planted you, fear the Lord, and seek out opportunities to witness and serve people who are literally your neighbors.

Grace and peace be with you,

Hannah OliverComment
